Empreinte numérique – Season 3: A culture to discover, an identity to preserve

As debates about the future of Francophone culture and its digital reach intensify, Printemps numérique, in collaboration with Télé-Québec en classe and BAnQ, presents the third season of the youth podcast Empreinte numérique, under the evocative theme “Your culture, your identity!”.

While algorithms increasingly dictate what we see, hear, and share, a crucial question arises: where does our culture fit into all this? Host Tom-Éliot Girard leads discussions with high school students from FACE School, artists, and experts to better understand how digital technologies influence the creation, dissemination, and discovery of cultural content.

Discoverability: A critical issue for local culture

According to the 2023 Québec Survey on the discovery of cultural products and digital media, led by Lysandre Champagne —one of the podcast’s guests— less than 15% of young people aged 15 to 29 regularly consume Québécois cultural content. Nearly 30% do not consume any at all. These findings raise fundamental questions about the role of digital platforms, cultural policies, and the commitment of institutions in promoting discoverability.

At a time when artists and cultural organizations are denouncing insufficient government support, this podcast series emerges as an educational and mobilizing tool to help reconnect young people with their culture.

“Today, with algorithms and the overwhelming amount of content online, discovering local creators has become almost a challenge! […]” — Tom-Éliot Girard, host of Empreinte numérique, actor, and singer

“With Empreinte numérique, we’re offering young people a unique opportunity to reflect on the challenges of the digital age. Season 3 encourages them to become aware of how they consume cultural content and how they want to be represented within it—an essential step to promoting our culture on digital platforms.” — Cynthia Racine, Director of Educational Content and Internal Production, Télé-Québec
