Finding: According to the research study “Culture et inégalités numériques : usages numériques des jeunes au Québec” (published by Printemps numérique in 2020), we note that the gendered digital divide is a worrying sociological phenomenon. This raises the question of equal opportunity in an increasingly digital society. It has been shown that certain populations often experience disparities due to a variety of factors, including gender, distance from major urban centers, socio-economic background, etc.

That’s why Montreal Digital Spring (Printemps numérique), organizer of the Digital café, wants to make this event an inclusive opportunity to help reduce the digital divide. Indeed, the program will offer a special day dedicated to Indigenous people on Friday, February 23, with the immersive “Algorithmic Territory” workshop to be presented in the 360˚ dome. Indigenous Youth Ambassadors will be on hand to share their vision of a desirable digital future for communities.

“In the ‘Algorithmic Territory’ workshop, youngsters will have the opportunity to explore different generative tools to create their own ‘Nitassinan’ from scratch. It’s a playful experience that immerses them in digital creation assisted by artificial intelligence”, says Stéphane Nepton, educational designer, trainer and speaker at Grandir Sans Frontières.

“I salute the Café numérique’s initiative in offering these spaces for expression, which will ensure the full development of young Indigenous highlight their involvement in their communities and in Quebec society,” says Mathieu Lacombe, Minister of Culture and Communications, Minister responsible for Youth and Minister responsible for the Outaouais region.

The Digital Café at Complexe Desjardins, in partnership with SYNTHÈSECompétence culture and Grandir Sans Frontières, is part of the Digital Youth Month program (February 1 to March 8), whose theme is Ensemble pour un numérique équitable. Numerous activities are offered to young people under 35 to discover Quebec initiatives and learn about the possibilities of digital technology (shows, video games, exhibitions, workshops, conferences, etc.).
